About the Club
item7

The Asheville Kennel Club, a member club of the American Kennel Club, was chartered in 1934 to advance and further the interest in purebred dogs of all breeds as well as to promote and advance responsible breeding, exhibiting, and care of purebred dogs. The club encourages sportsmanlike competition at events such as dog shows, agility trials and obedience trials.

The Asheville Kennel Club has never been large in terms of sheer membership numbers, but for over seven decades the member/volunteers of this organization have never wavered from their goal of educating the general public and supporting the community of dog fanciers in the Asheville area.

Community Involvement
item11e

For a decade, the Asheville Kennel Club has provided Humane Alliance 'Spay Neuter Coupons' at no cost or low cost to people who can not afford to have their pets altered.

We financially support a variety of dog oriented groups including the Animal Haven of Asheville, Kids for Kindness of Buncombe Co., North Carolina Federation of Dog Clubs (formerly the Confederacy of Tailwaggers), the North Carolina State University Veterinary School, as well as, several breed specific rescue organizations. Also, we support the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, an organization which helps dogs live longer, healthier lives through funding of research benefiting dogs and human beings.

Each year, club members speak to school groups and civic organizations, making presentations on responsible dog ownership and demonstrating canine good citizenship.

We are currently raising funds for an endowed scholarship program at the North Carolina Veterinary School in memory of club members who have passed on.

We are proud of the fact that when Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005, the Asheville Kennel Club was quick to respond, making immediate donations in excess of $5000 for dog rescue services and veterinary care.
